A Visitors Guide to the Golf Courses of St Andrews

Balgove Course

If you’re new to golf, then the Balgove Course is a great place to start. It’s the only 9-hole course in St Andrews and is therefore the ideal place for beginners, as well as those looking to perfect their short game. The Balgove is a great practicing ground with features including bunkers and a double green. It’s a family-friendly course that has built up a reputation for catering for all ages and abilities.

This course cannot be booked in advance. You simply turn up on the day to play.

Eden Course

Right beside the world-famous Old Course sits “The Himalayas” putting green (normally open April to September) where anyone and everyone can enjoy the experience of St Andrews golf, with absolutely no experience needed! The undulating course is owned by St Andrews Ladies’ Putting Club, so is sometimes used for organised competitions, but at most times it’s open to the public.

Jubilee Course

If you’re up for a challenge, then it is definitely worth paying a visit to the Jubilee Course. It’s considered by most to be the most difficult course of the famous Links.

The Jubilee Course was built in 1897 and was originally intended for ladies and beginners, however today it is considered a prime golfing location, with a championship layout, which was created in 1988. Similarly to the Eden Course, it’s recommended that you make a booking at least two days in advance.

Strathtyrum Course

In order to prepare yourself for the more challenging courses at the Links, it is recommended that you play a round at the Strathtyrum Course. This course was opened in 1993 and whilst it may have fewer bunkers than other golf courses in St Andrews, their tricky positioning will really test your skills, as will the sloping greens and borrows which make up the course. Book at least two days in advance to avoid disappointment.

New Course

The New course is actually the oldest new course in the world (still with us?) and was built by Tom Morris in 1895. It was named the ‘New Course’ so that people could easily differentiate it from its famous neighbour, the Old Course.

The New Course boasts rippling fairways and greens that will challenge even the most experienced golfers. Book 2 days ahead, tee times are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

The Castle Course

The Castle Course was opened in 2008 and is the newest addition to St Andrews Links. It is part of the largest public golfing complex in Europe, which is set on a rugged cliff-top offering breath taking views of the town below.

If you’re after a memorable golfing experience, The Castle Course is sure to deliver. Please keep in mind that it is not open during the close season, which spans from 2nd November 2015 – 1st March 2016.

The Old Course

Last but certainly not least we have The Old Course – the golf course you’re probably most interested in playing during your holiday in St Andrews.

As the name suggests, The Old Course is the oldest course in the world and is therefore the most iconic. Despite being recognised across the globe, the great thing about the Old Course is that it is still open for the public to play, allowing you to enjoy all it has to offer. The course is now accepting advanced reservations for 2016.
